The last thing Mallory Clark wants to do is move back home. However, she has no choice, as the company she worked for in Chicago has just downsized her, and everybody else. To make matters worse, her fiancé has broken their engagement, leaving her hurting and scarred. When her mother tells her that the once-famed Gray Oaks Manor, the house she always coveted as a child, is not only on the market but selling for a song, Mallory sees it as the best opportunity to put Chicago, and everything and everyone in it, behind her.
Arriving back home, Mallory runs into the gorgeous and mysterious Blake Hunter. Like her, Blake is interested in buying the crumbling old Victorian on the edge of the historic downtown center, although his reasons are his own. Blake is instantly intrigued by the flame-haired beauty with the fiery temper and the vulnerable expression in her eyes. He can feel the attraction between them and knows it is mutual, but he also knows that the last thing on earth he needs is to get involved with a woman determined to take away a house he has to have.
Blake is new to town, and his interest in the old Victorian piques Mallory's curiosity. She can't help but wonder what could be so special about the dilapidated house that it would captivate a stranger like Blake. As they begin to spend more time together, Mallory finds herself drawn to Blake's enigmatic personality and the air of mystery that surrounds him. Despite their initial tug-of-war over the property, they begin to forge a connection that goes deeper than their shared interest in the house.
As Mallory settles back into her hometown, she finds herself confronted with memories and relationships she had long since put behind her. The return to Gray Oaks Manor, the place she had once coveted, is bittersweet, as it brings back both fond recollections and painful reminders of her past. Meanwhile, Blake's own reasons for wanting the Victorian become increasingly clear, and Mallory finds herself caught in the middle of a complex web of secrets and desires.
As Mallory and Blake's relationship deepens, they must navigate the obstacles in their path, both personal and practical. The house they both covet becomes a symbol of their struggle, a tangible representation of the forces pulling them apart and the growing bond that threatens to bring them together. Ultimately, they must decide whether to let go of the past and embrace the possibility of a future, or to hold on to their individual dreams at the expense of their newfound connection.
